Cindy Richmond
Cindy Richmond is a ceramic artist living and working in Vancouver, Canada. After years observing the art world as a curator, art consultant and fine-arts editor, she discovered her own creative side experimenting with clay. Since 2018, her focus as a ceramic artist is deeply rooted in an exploration of forms influenced by nature. In particular, she is drawn to simple organic shapes that reference the landscapes and geological forms of the Canadian prairies and west coast. It is the dynamic contrasts between these two sources of inspiration that allows her to shift from creating very delicate to bold forms. The billowing cloud formations of the minimalist prairie landscape are a major inspiration, while the dramatic geological formations of the west coast framed by the sea also feature largely in her work.
Richmond enjoys the sculptural nature of hand building with clay, and working with the clay’s own characteristics. Each of her works is unique — no two works are the same. She may start a piece with a vision, yet allows it to evolve, shift and transform before it is finished. Her working process is about creating simple, classical, sculptural forms. It is through this process that her repertory of sculptural and functional vessels come to life creating a dialogue between craftsmanship and art.
